How can counselling help with autism and ADHD?

Do you have struggles related to neurodivergence like autism or adhd, or even both? It can be draining. Do you find the everyday hard, find it difficult to concentrate or complete a task? Do you have an abundance of energy but don’t know where to put it?

Do you have sensory needs that are overwhelming, or social anxiety which feels debilitating? All experiences are different and individual. Diagnosis or not, your experience and feelings are completely valid.

Counselling can help because it can look at the feelings that come from having ADHD and, or autism. You might feel isolated, lonely, or misunderstood. Having empathy and non-judgment from a counsellor can help you recognise and explore those feelings.

Another way counselling can help is by developing your self acceptance. Unfortunately, society isn’t always understanding, labelling people as “lazy”, “awkward” or “making it up.” Autism and ADHD are often missed in childhood. Women especially have been ignored in the diagnosing of and recognising neurodivergent traits.

Counselling can look at how growing up without recognition of neurodivergence may have affected your self-concept. Perhaps you now have a harsh inner critic? You might even experience feelings of grief and loss if you’ve received a diagnosis later as an adult.

You may also be affected by something called masking or burnout. Trying to fit into other people’s expectations, which can be exhausting in itself. Counselling can look at what’s right for you, listening more to your body and not what others expect of you.

The truth is, your brain might work a little bit different, so you might need a little bit of extra support with things. There is no shame in this. The world is set up to cater for a neurotypical person, but you may have unique needs and wants.

Counselling can help explore what you really need and what will help you. It could also help you recognise your strengths or develop your confidence to ask for what you need and set boundaries with others.
